Professional Career Solutions - Boise Job Market Report

It is an employer’s market. Or is it?

In these times, it seems as though there is nothing out there. Well, there is definitely less than we have seen in the past. Here is an interesting thought. All too often, I get to talk to people who have been searching and searching and express that there is very little out there in the market. This can sometimes be a little bit deceiving. There are a multitude of studies floating around by reputable sources that suggest as little a 6% of professional level positions will be filled through ads. This seems extremely pessimistic until you consider that that means there are 94% of jobs out there that you don't see.

This is important, because some people get caught in what is called "paralysis by analysis", and after awhile they become convinced, because they can't see the jobs they don't think are out there, that nothing is available. And they become paralyzed - or totally frustrated.

The fact is, it is not that jobs are not out there. It is just that if it is a good company, paying well, and people like to work there, they probably do not have to advertise. The old saying, "it is not what you know, it is who you know" has actually changed to "it is not what you know, it is not who you know, it is who knows you". So you have to take the initiative, and get known.

One of the reasons there are less and less jobs advertised is because there is a glut of people looking, and companies don't have to spend money advertising. Second, there is a lengthened opportunity cycle, the time that it takes for a company to go from recognizing a problem to creating an opportunity to solve that problem. During this time, they are connecting with people they know, talking with potential problem-solvers, and examining their resources and contacts, rather than advertising.

The moral of the story is that there is more out there than meets the eye. Feel free to contact our office for an analysis.
